Auditions for BECOMING will be held this October 25. The Girls Theater Project is looking for NYC Jewish girls ages 11-16 to audition on their stage. Information below.
Rooted in the voices, feelings and attitudes of a group of girls on being a Jewish girl in New York City, BECOMING is an original play performed by a group of girls aged 11-17. The project is aimed at girls aged 10-15 (and those that care about them) and is designed to give them tools with which to examine and develop their own self-esteem, independence and Jewish identity.
BECOMING was created in a four-month series of workshops with a diverse group of New York area Jewish girls - from Secular, Reform, Conservative and Orthodox families attending Jewish, private and public schools. All of the ideas and many of the words in BECOMING come directly from these workshops. The resulting play will be performed for groups and individuals at the 14th Street Y Theater over the next two academic years, supplemented by a DVD and website as well as a replicable model for replication of the project at other communities across the country.
In addition to performances of the play, the project will also include a DVD as well as a website, providing an interactive version of the play with links to sources of additional information on the many issues it raises, a "chat" component, and more.
As one of the girls says in the play, "Well, there's being a girl, and there's being Jewish, and there's living in New York. That's a lot!" The challenges of growing up today are enormous, and creating a vehicle that speaks the truth to girls, allows them to know that they are not alone, and gives them a way to connect to others like them and to ways to find support and assistance is an exciting and positive contribution to make in today's complex world.
