If you love authentic Thai cuisine then you will love Twisted Noodles.
This casual Thai restaurant boasts the largest menu in Durham for authentic
Thai dishes including all the traditional ones like Pad Thai, Chicken Satay,
Roast Pork noodle soup and Mango with sticky rice. They also feature a rare
Thai dessert you don't see very often called Rotee which is a Thai version
of a pancake. More about Rotee later.
The original Twisted Noodles restaurant is located on University Dr. In
Durham a short distance from 15-501 and I-40. At first appearance it doesn't
seem like a top notch Thai restaurant but looks are deceiving. The rave reviews
for Twisted Noodles in Bon Apetit magazine, Durham Citysearch and local
newspapers support the popularity of this Durham icon.
One of the most popular dishes on the menu is the "Drunken Noodles". I tried
this dish recently with the roasted duck breast option for about $14.00 and I
was not disappointed. The entrée was beautifully garnished with shredded leaf
lettuce and grated carrot. I could smell the pungent liquorice scent of the Thai
Basil as the waiter placed the dish in front of me. The tender noodles had been
stir fried in a dark brown sauce with dried chili's and were scrumptious on their
own. Combined with the perfectly cooked duck breast and crunchy vegetables
the dish was magnificent!
Just a suggestion if you like really spicy Thai food. You need to make sure
the wait staff understands that you like it really hot as most Thai restaurants
don't believe Americans can handle the hot Thai chili's.
An excellent Thai meal can only be topped by an extraordinary Thai dessert. I
highly recommend the "Rotee and Ice Cream" for $3.95. Rotee is the Thai Pancake I
mentioned earlier. This dessert reminds me of a freshly made and very thin waffle
cone which is served warm and wrapped around a scoop of cool ice cream. It was
incredible and unforgettable!
Service at Twisted Noodles was amazing considering the number of servers to guests.
And as busy as they were they never forgot to refill our drinks or take a moment to
answer our many questions.
The crowd at this restaurant on a Friday night was a cross section of Durham
society with college aged couples to Senior socialites and many ethnic groups were
represented. The mood was lively but not distracting or unpleasant.
Their is another Twisted Noodle restaurant in Chapel Hill at 1800 E. Franklin St.
which just recently opened. The menu in Chapel Hill is almost identical to the one
in Durham.
