Yuck.

It's sad to me when I see a box sitting on my front stoop, and I get really excited until I open it and am confronted with hundreds of polystyrene packing peanuts. Those things aren't biodegradable and forget about the recycling potential.
What you can do with those pesky things is reuse them. A lot of packing and shipping stores will reuse them if you simply drop them off in an easily manageable way. Just stuff them in a (preferably) recycled plastic bag, and swing by when you're in the neighborhood.

Thankfully, there are also packing peanuts that aren't made from polystyrene.  Some are made from vegetable starch and are easily thrown in the compost.  To tell if they are made of starch, run some water over them (or if you're daring, give 'em a lick). If they are compostable, they will disolve in water.

And those rigid foam blocks made out of natural gas (called expanded polystyrene)?  There are now areas to drop those off for recycling. There are two locations in Denver:

ACH Foam Technologies, LLC
5250 Sherman St
Denver, CO 80216
(303) 297-3844

Tech Block International
Call 720-221-3912 for locations
