Alabama's Democratic representatives sided with their Republican counterparts Saturday night in voting against H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act. While it is important to reform the nation's health care system, it is more important to do it correctly. To quote Rep. Artur Davis (D-AL7) from his press release, "we risk disaster if we get this wrong."
All of Alabama's Congressmen have expressed interest in fixing the system, and according to their websites (listed below), they want to concentrate on lowering health care costs while increasing coverage. According to this article by Conor Friedersdorf, the passed health care bill is deeply flawed and does nothing to actually fix the system. Similar sentiments are reflected in Rep. Davis' s statement (see above).
Saturday's vote is only the first step. The Senate must now pass their version of the bill, and then a common bill will have to be negotiated. These next steps are crucial, and the final bill must address the problems in our current system. The House's form of the bill fails at that, which is why Alabama's Democrats got their vote right.
Make sure your legislatures get this right: Rep. Jo Bonner (R-AL1); Rep. Bobby Bright (D-AL2); Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL3); Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL4); Rep. Parker Griffith (D-AL5); Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL6); Rep. Artur Davis (D-AL7); Sen. Jeff Sessions (R); Sen. Richard Shelby (R)
