It used to be that all children, while not created equally, were educated equally. They sat at their desks, completed the same worksheets and did the same homework assignments. They had the same set of responsibilities whether they were capable or not.

There has been a shift in the idea that a worksheet is the best way to reach all children. Through assessment of a child's strengths and weaknesses a teacher is able to tailor the educational experience to ensure that all of his or her students needs are met.

Does this mean that a teacher needs to provide individualized lessons for each child in the room? The answer to that question is absolutely not. By providing different options for different types of learners the teacher is able to provide instruction that will meet the needs of the entire class.

For example, if a Pre-K classroom is learning to write the letter A, perhaps tactile learners could practice drawing in sand. The kinesthetic learners may stand at the board and use water and paint brushes to achieve the same goal. There may be children that do excel at sitting and writing their letters the old fashioned way, so providing them with paper and pencils may be the right way to reach them.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to creating a learning environment that provides opportunities for all types of students. The cookie cutter image of what a classroom looks like is definitely a thing of the past.
