In a surprise move, the utopian socialists who comprise the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize to fellow traveller and "world citizen" President Obama. Since Obama has been in office for less than nine months, his selection by the committee has to be one of the most blatant political statements in the history of the Nobel Prize award. In fact, since the deadline for nominations for the award were due on February 1st, the committee based their decision on his accomplishments as president after being in office for less than ten days.

And the justification for awarding the prestigious prize to Barack Obama? "Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said in a citation. Upon reflection, it is apparent that this thin reed upon which to grant the honor is nothing more than the Obama domestic presidential campaign theme writ large, re-wrapped and packaged for international consumption on the world stage. Hope and Change and "Yes we can!" goes worldwide.

The recent foreign policy actions of Obama comport well with the Nobel committee's world view. President Obama at every opportunity has not only apologized for the supposed sins of his country, he has made it clear that he is going to conduct international diplomacy under the aegis of a chastened America. It should come as no surprise that the award was granted shortly after Obama's speech to the United Nations where he espoused his view of international relations, a fundamental pillar of which consists of a humbled and subdued United States ceding its authority as guarantor of international stability and security and subjecting itself to the whims and dictates of the "international community."

The award will give added credence to Obama's preexisting pretensions of being a messianic figure. Obama will view the award as a carte blanche to continue with his foreign policy goals of ceding the sovereignty of the nation he purportedly leads to international bodies such as the U.N., the International Criminal Court and the Hague, and he will continue to follow the operative assumptions of that policy, which can be summarized with the proposition that it's better to be liked than to be respected.
