Wine bars have been springing up like mushrooms all over the Washington D.C. area. There is Veritas in Dupont Circle, Cork and Vinoteca on U Street, Proof in Gallery Place, and Sonoma in Capitol Hill. D.C.’s newest wine bar, Enology, has opened up in Tenleytown, taking the place of what used to be Zebra Bar. Enology, meaning the study and making of wine, occupies a charming outdoor patio and an all white bar. A cozy and comfortable spot, the bar has a lengthy wine list and some pretty sweet happy hour specials. All wines by the glass are $1 and any bottle which is served by the glass is 20% off. On Tuesdays those bottles are half price, and on Wednesdays all speciality cocktails are half off. This deal is especially fabulous because Enology’s bartender John makes the best drinks in town. Even though it isn’t included in the happy hour specials try one of his martinis….you won’t regret it.

Clearly, the extensive wine list and the fabulous bartender make Enology a welcome neighborhood addition to the Tenleytown/Cleveland Park area. But with drinks there is always a need for food, and this is where Enology falls short. The menu itself is confusing, as there is a separate section for appetizers and main courses, and yet the wait staff claims that all of the items are really what is considered a “small plate.” The appetizers include a pesto flatbread, which is rather soggy and covered with a tasteless cheese. The pappardelle, a main course, is bland and uninteresting. One pleasure on the menu (be careful these can be very addictive!) is the herbed frites. The truffled aioli that accompanies them is creamy and delightful.

The desserts at Enology are similar to the savory items on the menu…while the chocolate torte is dense and rich and would satisfy any chocoholic, the pumpkin ravioli is mushy and bland, and the banana split is something which could easily be made at home.

Overall, Enology is a delight for wine lovers and happy hour aficionados. Stick with the herbed frites to accompany your drinks and for dessert…have a glass of dessert wine.
