No matter your age, no matter your current profession, it’s never too late to make a change. After All Grandma Moses didn’t begin her renowned painting career until her 70’s, right? No one knows such possibilities better than Dr. Nancy Irwin, psychotherapist and clinical hypnotist. At the age of 42, following a successful career as a stand-up comedian, she went back to school to earn her doctorate.
“People would come up to me and say, ‘Oh, wow, I could never do what you’re doing.’ But really, if you can read, you can go back to school. Anyone can do it,” she asserts. Irwin established a successful Los Angeles practice in 2004 and began collecting stories of others who had turned their lives around after age 40.
Recently, she published her first book “YOU-TURN: Changing Direction in Midlife,” a collection of “over 40 stories of people over 40.” The inspiring stories are from a diversity of real people who started a new path—and will motivate you to do the same. Chapters include stories about a grieving mother who started a school for the leprosy-affected in India; a crack dealer who became a real estate investor; a 73-year-old singer who enrolled in law school; a catering director who started rehabbing used cars for low-income people; and a Harvard lawyer who became a New Age healer.
Irwin states: “I like to think of it like a Chicken Soup for the Soul for Baby Boomers. This book is for the fearful and frozen; anyone who feels stuck in struggle yet really wants to move forward. I’ve included some professional tips on navigating change at any age, but the emphasis of the book is on the stories told in first person. It’s the kind of book that you can pick up, read a chapter, put it down; very easy reading yet inspirational at the same time.”
Irwin is still collecting personal stories for a possible sequel and welcomes people to write to her with their amazing late-life transformations. Additional information can be found at the book’s website.
I also welcome readers to tune into my radio show, The Athena Fortune Show, on BlogTalkRadio this Wednesday, September 30th, at 9:30 am, when I’ll be conducting a live interview with Irwin. The first caller will receive a free, autographed copy of her book!
