A Los Angeles-based photographer and entrepreneur follows her dreams

I have to admit, this is a story that was inspired by a personal experience. I recently had my children photographed by a family friend, Karen Vaisman, and was literally touched by the magical results. With every snap of the shutter, she was able to capture my children’s inner spirit. What impresses me most about Vaisman is the fact that she has decided to pursue her passion, literally turning her Agoura Hills home into a studio, teaching us all that we must never give up on our dreams. This is her story…
“My father bought me my first camera when I was 13, and I’ve had a camera in my hand ever since,” Vaisman admits. “I was also the yearbook photographer in high school.” Vaisman says her high school friends used to tease her that a camera strap grew out of her neck.
While attending Syracuse University, from which she graduated cum laude, she interned under renowned photographer Max Waldman, best known for his visually stunning dance images. “I remember him taking me to the American Ballet Theatre where I assisted him. He worked in black & white yet his subjects appeared almost three dimensional. To this day, I’m inspired by his work” she recalls.
Upon graduation, however, the economic climate was such that she could not pursue photography as a profession. “I pursued a variety of careers to make ends meet, including earning a real estate license,” she says.
After getting married and while raising her two daughters, she used every opportunity to hone her craft, often using her children as muses. “Every birthday party turned into a photo session,” she jokes. As her girls grew older, she realized she wanted to take up the profession again, full time.
Though she now offers portraiture for the entire family, she especially loves photographing kids. “I love to shoot children because their innocence and wonderment of the world is so evident in their eyes. I like to focus on capturing the moment, the sparkle in the eye, the intimacy of relationships,” she notes. ” I focus on the beauty of light and how it wraps around and sculpts

a 3 D scene into a 2 D image.”
How does she get her young subjects to sparkle? “I try to make it fun! When the experience is enjoyable, the whole memory of the session has a warmth to it that shows up on a young child's face. I often have my daughters help out, because they relate so well to young children. Toys, games, bubbles, pets, fans, balls even candy...whatever it takes to have a good time while we shoot,” she explains.
Thanks to self-taught Photoshop training, she also creates fantasy-like images. “I love to paint an image and create gallery wrapped giclee canvases, which I can take from an image that I capture, or I can construct a new image from my imagination and my client's vision.”
After each session, Vaisman presents a large screen projection, multi-media screening of your images. She observes, "I often have to get the tissue box, as most of my clients, moms' in particular, realize at that moment, as the music plays and the images flash by, that I've touched an emotional chord. I know then that I've done a great job and nothing can be more satisfying."
