Paying homage to the 300SL Gullwing, comes the arrival of the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG.
Mercedes is marketing the SLS as a super car, and that it is. Under the SLS AMG’s hood is the same version of the V-8 that’s been powering every Mercedes Benz with the AMG badge except, this time the engine actually displaces 6.3-litrers. The Mercedes produces 571 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. These 571 ponies will sprint you from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 315km/h
The real beauty of the SLS is the wingdoors, with the two doors arched up above the roofline, it won’t stop amazing passers-by. The wide grill and huge Mercedes Star are strongly reminiscent of the original.
Inside, the upper part of the dashboard is simple in style, carrying just the monitor for the entertainment system and satellite navigation. All controls are concentrated along the wide center console. There are also some unique details such as the jet inspired air vents. Fine materials are used throughout. It’s a luxurious driving environment, full of leather and aluminum.
The Mercedes goes on sale in North America sometime spring of 2010 with a price tag of about $280,000 CAD. The Gullwings are back and gives the other auto makers something to think about.
