Gravel and Gold Storefront

Gravel and Gold sells a blend of vintage clothing, hand-made goods, and collectibles with a community oriented approach to fashion. The charming 70's inspired shop arrived in the Mission three months ago. The storefront on 21st Street and Lexington was formerly occupied by Ellie Olson which closed in April. The new owners; Cassie McGettigan, Lisa Foti-Straus and Nile Nash, have transformed the space. There is a couch in the window and a yarn-detailed dressing room that folds open into a bar/dj booth for events.

This is a store where browsers are encouraged to seek inspiration. It invites us to admire its curious assortment of lines and artifacts for their back-story, including who made it and how, or where the item came from. When asking about a line of striped T-shirts they sell, one of the owners introduces the line: R.P. Miller Stripey Shirts, how the items were made: produced at a 100 year old knitting mill, and where they came from: Pennsylvania. These striped T-shirts feel soft like underwear and sold at a great price ($20 for the long-sleeved version).

The blog on the G&G website includes photographs of their shoppers with purchases and the reason their purchase was the perfect find. The blog also contains invitations to events at the space. Each of the 'makers' that provide goods to the store have a link and generously sized photo on the G&G web-site. The mission district at its best provides a safe place for individuals to explore their creativity through interacting. This feeds into the eclectic look of the street fashion in the area. That is the message that G&G adheres to as it emphasizes the importance of knowing the source of your product. The unique pieces in this store are ones that you can write home about, with worlds of information.
