Women now have a treatment option for heavy periods that is not based on hormones. The FDA approved tranexamic acid under the brand name, Lysteda, to be used for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding.

Lysteda (tranexamic acid) for heavy bleeding during menstruation

Tranexamic acid is not a new medication. It has been available for some time to help patients with hemophilia whose blood does not clot appropriately. Lysteda, which is produced by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc., prevents breakdown of clots so that bloodflow is decreased. It has previously been used as an injectable, but is now available in tablet form.

Side effects of Lysteda for heavy menstrual periods

Patients taking Lysteda may experience

  • headache
  • sinus problems
  • back and abdominal pain
  • muscle pain and cramps
  • joint pain
  • anemia and tiredness

Women who are also on birth control pills should use Lysteda with caution due to an increased risk of blood clots.

Tranexamic acid was found in studies to increase risk of vision problems. Animal studies show retinal changaes. Human patients have reported some visual changes. Women should have a thorough eye examination prior to starting tranexamic acid.

What to do for more information on Lysteda

Patients who are interested in Lysteda should contact their gynecologist to determine if this medication may be right for them.
