On Sunday, November 15th the Center for Hearing and Communication is holding it's 12th annual adolescent workshop for hard of hearing and deaf kids. The Turning Points Workshop is an opportunity for tweens in grades 5 through 8 to meet and socialize with their hard of hearing and deaf peers. The workshop will look at the issues of self esteem, friendship and navigating the sometimes turbulent world of adolescence. It is also an opportunity for parents to connect.
A highlight of the day's events will be the "Real Deal" discussion and problem solving panel. This is an opportunity for hard of hearing and deaf teens to speak candidly to their younger peers about their social lives and school experiences. Arielle Schacter, a high school sophomore and the daughter of hard of hearing advocate Janice Schacter, is one of the teen panelists. There's a Q&A session at the end where the discussion is sure to be lively.
Jessica Levine, this year's key note speaker, actually attended the first workshop in 1997. Jessica was born deaf and came to the Center for Hearing and Communication (then called the League for the Hard of Hearing) as a child for speech therapy. Jessica wears bilateral cochlear implants and has always attended mainstream schools. Today, she is working on her Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) at Northwestern University and she is starting a one-year external internship at Stoneybrook University Medical Center on Long Island. Jessica graduated from Tufts University in 2006 with a B.S. in biopsychology and biomedical engineering. Jessica is an inspiration for all deaf and hard of hearing kids as she is living proof that nothing is beyond their grasp.
