For some reason, most doctors ignore their most important source of new patients: the community! Many doctors don’t get involved in community activities: charitable events, school events, sports teams, religious activities, etc. It is extremely important that a doctor become involved and therefore “get the message out” that he or she is “giving back.” By doing this he or she will be perceived as a “trusted person” and someone that people will want as their doctor.
Doctors need to realize that people who seek services (whether health-related, legal, accounting, etc.) go to professionals who are not only capable but are well-liked. People need to know that a doctor cares about the community: the children, the poor and the elderly. How does a doctor become respected and well-liked in his or her community? There are many ways to accomplish this goal. Here’s one that’s very effective.
Run a “good deed” contest for children. Challenge children to write or email you with good deeds they’ve done. Announce the contest in schools, churches and synagogues in your community and let all the local politicians, community leaders, businessmen and the local news media know about what you’re doing. On a date certain, give the winner a lap top computer at your office. You’ll have at least a handful of influential members of your community, and members of the news media, attend the award ceremony that day. You’ll probably get your picture in the local paper or even get coverage on the local television news! Do you think this will get you more patients? You can bet on it!
It is very important to realize that events such as this need to be very carefully orchestrated to achieve the desired effect. If no one knows you’re doing this, you won’t experience an increase in new patients. Retain the services of a professional who can help you get optimal results.
