This is the second in a series of articles on how doctors can give back to their community (click here for the previous piece). Many doctors ignore their community which is the source of new patients. It is extremely important that a doctor become involved and therefore “get the message out” that he or she is “giving back.” By doing this a doctor will be perceived as a “trusted person” and someone that people will seek out to address their health issues. Here are two programs that have proven to be very successful.

Conduct free examinations for the underprivileged. Set aside a couple of hours each month and do exams for those in the community who can’t afford medical attention. If you’re a dentist, for example, rent a mobile medical dental van and go into a poorer neighborhood and conduct free exams. People will be lining up around the corner and will truly appreciate your help.

Go to assisted living facilities or nursing homes. Visit senior citizens for several hours each month and help them with their medical needs. If you’re an optometrist, conduct some eye exams and hand out free reading glasses. If you’re a dentist, do some oral screenings for cancer. The list of things you can do is only limited by your imagination!

Please note: it is very important that these events be very carefully orchestrated. You need to inform your local politicians, community leaders, businessmen and most importantly, members of the news media that these events are taking place. The news media really are interested in stories where people are helping others and will most likely cover the event. Local news coverage of the event will get you more patients!  Retain the services of professionals who can make sure all the pieces come together and you get the desired results.

Next: more programs aimed at giving back to the community.
