The biggest theatrical debut of the year so far takes place today as Watchmen hits screens across the nation.
Based on one of the most popular graphic novels of all time, Watchmen stars an ensemble cast that includes Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode and Patrick Wilson as a batch of masked vigilantes. It is set in an alternate version of 1985 during which Richard Nixon is still president, the United States's tension with the Soviet Union draws increasingly more difficult and costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society.
A plot to kill and discredit all superheroes is uncovered in the artistic action flick and it is up to a retired group of the vigilantes to track down the mastermind behind the plan and decide whether the world's future is worth saving. The Warner Bros. motion picture will easily capture the top spot at this weekend's box office. It will likely even break a few records.
Meanwhile, Magnolia Pictures is counting on moviegoers hoping to avoid the blockbuster fanboy rush with its release of the art house romantic drama Two Lovers today in a limited number of theaters. The flick features Joaquin Phoenix in what the actor has repeatedly announced will be his final foray into the film industry.
Phoenix plays Leonard, a suicidal man who moves back into his childhood home after getting his heart broken. Once there, Leonard meets two women – Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow), a mysteriously exotic and potentially dangerous neighbor, and Sandra (Vinessa Shaw), the caring daughter of a businessman who is a safe choice for any man. Which woman will he choose?
And which movie will you choose?
