The late King of Pop is the current king of the box office.
Sony Pictures Entertainment “This is It” earned about $23.2 million in the No. 1 spot this weekend. That figure brings the movie's total since debuting last Wednesday to about $34.3 million. Director Kenny Ortrega offers moviegoers and music lovers a unique look at Jackson's rehearsals for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place this summer in the concert film. Drawn from more than 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage, the documentary captures the artist at work as he creates and perfects his final show.
Last weekend's top-earner Paramount Pictures' horror flick “Paranormal Activity” fell to second-place. Earning about $16.4 million this weekend, the project has made about $84.6 million to date. Shot documentary-style, the movie tells the story of a young, middle class couple who moves into what seems like a typical suburban house. As time moves on, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night.
Although Overture Films' “Law Abiding Citizen” earned a mere $7.4 million this weekend, it jumped up one spot to third-place. It now has about $51.5 million in the bank. Clyde Shelton's (Gerard Butler) wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion in the thriller. When the killers receive a light sentence, the embittered man sets into motion a deadly series of events in hopes of forcing government leaders to fix the flawed justice system that failed his family. Prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) must outwit the brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills.
Similarly, Universal Pictures' “Couples Retreat” climbed one place to No. 4 with about $6.5 million. Its new total comes to about $87 million. Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk star as four Midwestern couples who embark on a journey to a tropical island resort. However, when the couples discover that their fun in the sun comes with required participation in the resort's couples therapy, all of their dirty laundry is hung out to dry.
Filmmaker Spike Jonze's cinematic adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic book “Where the Wild Things Are” fell two spots to fifth-place. Earning about $5.9 million this weekend, Warner Bros. Pictures has made about $62.7 million from the movie thus far. The story follows the adventures of Max (Max Records), a head-strong young boy who leaves home after having a fight with his mother only to find himself in a mysterious forest bordering a vast sea. Misunderstood and rebellious, Max sets sail to the land of the Wild Things, where mischief reigns.
Rounding out this weekend's top 10 were Lionsgate Films' “Saw VI” ($5.3 million), Summit Entertainment's “Astro Boy”($3.5 million), Screen Gems' “The Stepfather” ($3.2 million), Universal Pictures' “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant” ($3.1 million) and Fox Searchlight Pictures' “Amelia” ($3 million).
