Atheists to take on Christians at Orange County Freethought debate

Three Christians and three atheists will face off in a debate “Does God of the Bible Exist” on Dec. 9 at the Costa Mesa Community Center, 1845 Park Avenue, Costa Mesa.

The debate is sponsored by the Orange County Freethought Alliance.
Among the debaters will be Bruce Flamm, M.D. of Riverside, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, Irvine. He and his wife, Jan Goings,are the co-organizers of Inland Empire Atheists, a meetup group for atheists, agnostics, skeptics and freethinkers. Flamm holds a degree from Wake Forest University of Medicine, is a lifetime member of Freedom From Religion, and serves on the advisory board of Coalition for Secular America. He is an outspoken critic of supernatural and faith-healing claims and has published articles in the Skeptical Inquirer.

Debaters will discuss arguments for and against God's existence and whether the god of the Bible can exist. After each of eight questions there will be short rebuttal and an open moderated discussion. The panel will then turn to selected questions submitted in advance to: debate@freethoughtalliance.org. Emailers are asked to designate which side they would like questons to be addressed.

In addition to Flamm, atheists debaters will be:
-- Mark Smith, a mechanical engineer, who runs a Website that presents arguments and challenges to theists worldwide. http://www.JCnot4me.com

-- Alex UzDavine, a student at University of California in Irvine,is studying psychology and social behavior and is a leader of the Atheists, Agnostics, & Rationalists club at UCI.

Christian debaters will be:
-- Hugh Ross http://www.reasons.org/, an astrophysicist, was a fellow At Caltech where he researched quasi-stellar objects, or “quasars.” He is the founder of Reasons to Believe. And the author of The Fingerprint of God, The Creator and the Cosmos, Beyond the Cosmos, The Genesis Question, A Matter of Days, Creation as Science, Why the Universe Is the Way It Is, and More Than a Theory.

-- Clay Jones, D. Min. is assistant professor of Christian apologetics at Biola University. He has authored scholarly articles, and formerly hosted a nationally-syndicated, talk radio program, Contend for Truth. He is currently writing a book, Why God Allows Evil.

-- Dan Grossenbach, M.A., a federal criminal investigator, teaches apologetics at Mount of Olives Church in Mission Viejo, and is a contributor to the blogsite ApologeticJunkie.com

The moderator will be Brian Dunning, a computer scientist, who is the the host and producer of Skeptoid: Critical Analysis of Pop Phenomena, a weekly pro-science, anti-pseudoscience podcast. He is also the author of two books Skeptoid and Skeptoid II and has appeared on numerous radio shows and television documentaries.

Admission is $10 at Paypal or check, $15 at the door. The Organizers expect the event will probably sell out and urge early registration. The debate starts at 7 p.m. and is expected to last two and a half hours. For tickets, Click here
