A short drive, (42 miles) from Central and Washington, downtown Phoenix. A place to hike, enjoy nature, camp or just relax and watch the stars. Tom Fisher is the manager of Lost Dutchman State Park. He knows his stuff and will do his best to take care of you. If he's not around, you can look for Steve Jakubowski or Diana Bishop. They value their visitors and want their stay to be as enjoyable as possible. The park is just north of Apache Junction on State Route 88 (The Apache Trail).
If you want to drive (61.5 miles) a few miles more, you could do a day trip to Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park, just south of Superior. The park is well know for its plants, trees, nice trails and discovery garden. They also have educational tours about the humming birds, the turkey vultures, dragon flies etc. Tracey Hanley is the manager and is also a great guy and loves his job. The director is Mark Siegwarth and he definitely wants you to enjoy your visit. If you run into a fellow by the name of Paul Wolterbeek, hold on to your hat. This guy has more energy than a bus load of school kids. He's the volunteer coordinator at the park and loves every part of his job. If you get the chance to speak to him, it's a great experience. There are a couple of small but good restaurants in Superior. Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a great day trip.
Visit the parks help them with their revenue needs and enjoy yourself at the same time. There also is a county park 13 miles east of Lost Dutchman. It is the county's Usery Mountain Regional Park at 3939 N Usery Pass Rd. in Mesa, AZ 85207
