Online job applications seem to be the standard method of applying for a job today. There are not many companies that even accept the old paper applications anymore. This is more convenient for everyone if you think about it. The person applying for the jobs can do so from the privacy of his or her home, not driving from one place to another. The company no longer has to keep files full of paper applications on hand for years. So this seems to be a win-win situation for everyone.
This is a win-win situation for everyone, everyone including identity thieves. All your information right there on one simple form, almost seems too easy. You are required to put your full name, your address, your phone number, your date of birth and your Social Security Number on these forms. You no longer have the opportunity to place this information into the hands of the manager of the establishment, you just hit the submit button, and off it goes. But do you really know where it is going?
There is so much emphasis placed on securing your identity today, why is it that companies are allowed to require you to send this information out? Yes it is true that most companies have taken precautions to help secure this information, but how do you know the site itself is legitimate? It is far too easy for someone to make a website that looks like another website with the intentions of stealing personal information.
Do you believe the government should take steps to ban this type of action online? Do you feel companies should replace the online applications with the original paper applications?
We just need to use caution when submitting these applications and take the necessary precautions to ensure your identity remains out off the wrong hands. Before submitting an application to a website, take a minute to call the company and make sure the website you are sending the application to is actually the right site. You may also ask them if they can email you an application to fill out and email back to someone in the human resources department. If you are emailing it to a specific person, at least you have a name of the person that should be reviewing your application, this way if there is a question about someone misusing your information; you will have a starting point to begin the investigation.
