This weekend, I’ve seen two hilarious comedy specials. The first was “Shaq and Cedric Present: All Star Comedy Jam,” which was filmed earlier this year during NBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix, Arizona. It airs on Showtime through Tuesday, and is available on DVD. The other was Wanda Sykes’ current HBO special, “I’ma Be Me.”
In the "All Star Comedy Jam," Cedric the Entertainer and four top comics – Tommy Davidson, Aries Spears, DeRay Davis and Kevin Hart – take no prisoners in their deliciously raw take on sex, relationships and family.
However, the show is heavy on the N-word and B-word, and the comedians would have been just as funny without the slurs.
Their heavy use in comedy feels behind the times.
On the other hand, Wanda Sykes is not just out of the closet, she is out of the box. You need only be reminded of the White House Correspondents Dinner that made her a household name, to know what I mean.
That’s why her show is appropriately titled, “I’Ma Be Me.” In Wanda Sykes-form she imagines the trysts that must take place in the First Couple’s bedroom. She reflects on race, aging and the body betrayal that pops up after 40; even erectile dysfunction. And all the while, Sykes reminds us how her relationship with her French wife and newborn twins is no different from any other family.
Even with years of critical acclaim in comedy writing and performing on hit shows, Sykes, 45, acknowledged on a recent “Oprah Winfrey Show” that this feels like her time.
It has been quite a year. In November, she launches “The Wanda Sykes Show,” a late night gig on Fox.
At the end of her HBO special, Sykes stands firmly on stage, waving and mouthing thank you to the roaring audience, and it’s clear that it is her time. The audience responds with a, "Bravo!"
“What God has willed for you is yours….” A Course in Miracles.
