Limani Restaurant, Roslyn, NY, is an enormously large and surprisingly intimate, outstanding restaurant that offers incredibly fresh gourmet food with impeccable service.

Entering the restaurant teases the senses. A friendly hostess welcomes new guests and old friends. The dramatic light and colossal space grabs your eyes and begs you to notice every detail. The entry floors are tiled in a whimsical array of inviting tiles, drawing the guest to enter the bar or proceed to the dark wood floor dining room. The dining room has well arranged fine china on top of  various sized round tables. The chairs are upholstered in a luxurious cream leather that is so soft, you cant help burrowing into them while a white linen napkin is unfolded by the waiter and placed on your lap. The large windows provide a vast amount of light which is diffused through white sheer fabric creatively draped from the high ceilings, creating intimate dining sections scattered in front of a pristine kitchen. This is not the place that throws dead dirty fish on yesterdays melted ice chips. Delicious desserts, serving platters and seasonal produce is tastefully arranged on the counters in a photo-shoot like manner. Behind, top chefs are busy at work preparing orders. The waiters are impeccably dressed and incredibly attentive to every guest. The sophisticated decor continues to the huge gold mosaic round lights that hang from the clean white ceiling. Neatly tucked to one side is a wine room that doubles as a private dining space. The wine room is equally well lit and intimately private. Each bottle carefully tagged and numbered. The smell of fresh ingredients and culinary delights drowns your mouth while you blankly stare at the menu wondering what to order.

Creamy and light hummus and a lightly seasoned eggplant spread are bought to the table to be enjoyed with warm fresh pita breads. Drinks are ordered and meals are selected.

The appetizer of grilled octopus is served from silver spoons by the professional waiters. There is nothing chewy or fish-like about this meat, rather it melts in your mouth. The flavor is complemented by olive oil and a light lemon zest.

Thin sliced crisp zucchini and eggplant, lightly battered and fried, though with no reminder of oil or grease, is piled 12" high and served with homemade tzatziki. The Tzatziki is light and creamy and a perfect combination of finely shredded cucumber, garlic and fresh dill.

The waiter proceeds to give every guest a taste of a delicate Greek specialty cheese made from sheep's milk . The cheese was battered in a light coating of dough and sprinkled with regular table salt and fresh green herbs.

Various meals were tried, especially, the Bifteki, grilled seasoned ground beef served with warm Greek potato fries. Several of us noted that the beef is juicy and flavorful but not greasy. The salty fries are complemented with another serving of the tzatziki sauce. Another patron ordered the Moussaka, layered eggplant, potato and ground meat with a white cream sauce served casserole style. This entree is traditionally a heavy dish and rightfully prepared at Limani. Two other patrons enjoyed fresh salads with colorful tomatoes, feta cheese, various olives, onions and other ingredients.

Between each course, used dishes and silverware is replaced with shiny forks and knives and plates are carefully placed in front of each guest, almost in a way to cleanse your palate and hint another great course is coming out of the kitchen.

After the meal,  hot coffee is served and the table is re-arranged again making room for four large square platters of mouth-watering desserts. A handful of various Greek cookies are presented. The walnut spice cake is 5" high and served with ice cream. Bite-size Baklava is scattered on a plate decorated with fresh raspberry sauce drizzled artistically around the freshly prepared layered sweet treat. Milopita, an apples and pastry dough dessert, is freshly baked and complemented with pistachio ice cream.

During the meal, the space continues to grab your attention. But by the end of the meal, you realize that while the space is enormous and intimidating, the restaurant is configured in such a way to make it cozy and sophisticated. However, the real draw to Limani is the fresh incredible food and outstanding service.
