Maintain the Waistline During the Holiday Season
The average American gains approximately 8 lbs between the Thanksgiving and New Years Day holidays. Studies have also shown that people unknowingly consume more calories in the following situations:
• Food is presented in large quantities.
• A wide variety of food is present.
• More people are present.
• Being distracted while doing something else.
• Tempting foods are within reach and within eyesight.
Does this describe an event that the majority of us will be participating in this month?
What’s worse is that some of that weight seems to be permanent. So how do you maintain or even lose weight during the part of year when food is the focal point of everything we do? Here are some easy to follow tips for keeping that waistline during the holidays.
Take Charge
- To maintain or lose weight during the holidays, you need to be VERY aware of what you are eating, and the activity you are getting. Track your calories that you eat, and make sure that you are getting in some extra exercise to counteract the extra food you will be eating.
· Increase your activity before large meals. This will help to keep those extra calories from
filling up your pants.
- Go for a walk
- Get to the gym
- Take a class
- Clean the house
· Control your Intake
- Use a smaller plate - research has shown that the size of the plate we use helps determine how much food we eat. Using a smaller plate will reduce the amount of food proportionately.
- Eat less food the rest of the day - make an effort to eat less food during the rest of the day to make room for the food you will eat later that day.
- Make healthier choices – there is always some healthier options to the high-calorie foods that are traditionally served.
Maintaining your weight during the holidays is not that difficult. It just takes a little planning, and some will power.
