Actress Mayim Bialik represents a growing trend among homeschool families: blending Attachment Parenting with homeschooling.
While the public perception is that most homeschoolers choose that path for religious reasons, more and more parents are choosing to homeschool for reasons related to family closeness. In this small poll, for instance, more than twice as many parents listed "family closeness" as a reason for homeschooling than "to include more moral or religious instruction."
Bialik, who got her acting start in the movie "Beaches" and went on to play the title role in the teenage sitcom "Blossom" among other acting roles, sites similar reasons for choosing to homeschool her sons. In an interview for the Washington Times, she says she and her husband decided to embrace a traditional family-raising style, "the way people always raised children, except for the last 200 years."
According to Bialik, practices like co-sleeping, nursing babies on demand, using cloth diapers and eating a vegetable-based diet help them stay in touch with their children's needs and also be environmentally responsible. She and her husband saw homeschooling as a natural extension of this lifestyle.
Bialik says of her parenting and homeschooling philosophy for her sons (ages 1 and 4), "Our parenting style is to follow our own best instincts. We go by gentle discipline. We don't treat children like adults, but we treat them the same as we would all people, believing that if we are kind to him, he will be kind, too."
Bialik is a spokeswoman for the Holistic Moms Network, a nonprofit organization that links moms who are interested in holistic parenting and natural living. You can also read more about her and the network in this interview on the HMN blog.
