In honor of Veterans Day today, here are some simple ways to teach kids about Veterans Day and why we celebrate it.

  • The VA Kids page has lots of resources for teachers here about subjects like Veterans Day and national symbols.  There is also a page for kids (K-5th grade) here and older kids here.
  • Military.com has 7 ways to celebrate Veterans Day with your kids.  There's also a teachers' resource guide and a poster you can download.
  • This site for teachers has lots of materials for Veterans Day, including word searches, fact sheets, lesson plans and lots more.
  • Our kids also always call Grandpa and thank him for all that he did to serve our country and keep us safe.  My husband's father served in the Korean War and still carries the physical and emotional wounds.  He was the only man in his platoon to survive and he speaks to school groups and others about his experiences and the devastation of war.  He is one of our heroes.

Thanks to the veterans and their spouses and children who endure so much and pay such a high price for our country.  No matter what our thoughts about the wars, these men and women deserve our humble gratitude.  Happy Veterans Day.
