The Fourth Kind
The Fourth Kind

A fact, mysteriously since the 1960s, a disproportionate number of the population in Alaska has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.

Another fact, in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.

There are the basic steps that were presented on UFO’s by Dr. J. Allen Hynek with the Center For UFO’s in the 1970’s where a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. Relating to humans and contact with life from other worlds, Dr. Hynek presented this line of thought. A close encounter of the first kind would be “sighting”; a close encounter of the second kind, “evidence”; a close encounter of the third kind is “contact” (director Steven Spielberg highlighted this aspect with his hit, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” in 1977); and a close encounter of the fourth kind is, “Abduction”.

“The Fourth Kind” presents the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses using the actual videotapes of psychologist Abigail Tyler’s patients (recorded with time code stamps in 2000), and of Dr. Abigail who states her young daughter at that time, was also abducted and never found to this day. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

If awards can be given for exceptional production style and technique, writer/director Olatunde Osunsanmi would get my highest for the presentation of the actual footage of the patient sessions, the real Dr. Tyler’s footage, and police stake out videos. He also used actors portraying the actual persons in the videos to bridge the time frames of the events, split screens with the actual video (with time code visible) and recreated footage shot. The presentation style gave one viewing, the feeling of being another camera, documenting the facts as they occurred.  This writer used the same technique with the opening paragraph to this review to add the air of urgency with the word "fact".  Nice technique…

Starring as Dr. Abigail Tyler in “The Fourth Kind” is my favorite action actress Milla Jovovich. She’s the star of the highly successful “Resident Evil” film series. “Resident Evil: Afterlife”, the fourth film in the series, is due in 2010!

Starring Milla Jovovich, Will Patton, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Corey Johnson, and Elias Koteas.

Written and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Universal Pictures release. Rated PG-13 for violent/disturbing images, some terror, thematic elements and brief sexuality. Runtime: 98 minutes.
