TBS was able to steal third with the newly scripted sitcom, My Boys, starring Jordana Shapiro, Reid Scott , Jamie Keller, Kellee Stewart [from the movie Guess Who with Bernie Mac], Michael Bunin, Kyle Howard and Jim Gaffigan. Ms. Shapiro brings her character PJ Franklin to life. With the fourth season gearing up spring 2010, it's sure to continue using its staple artillery with whimsical comedy just barely a notch above sarcasm.
Although underrated, for a show that's riding on the heels of reality-based programming, it fills a void for a comedy with quality writing and doesn't need nudity, vulgar language or gimmicks to make you tune in.
Its only flaw is that it doesn't run many episodes.
Season one, introduced the characters of PJ, Chicago-based professional sports writer, her best friend Stephanie, another columnist turned author, Kenny a sports memorabilia store owner, Bobby a sports writer for PJ's rival publication who doesn't need to work as his family is rich, her brother Andy and former roommate Brendan.
PJ is looking for love but not the traditional diva way. She's an upfront, sometimes intimidating, tomboy surrounded by the men in her life so finding a love match for her isn't as easy as it seems. In order to aid in her quest, her bff and only female friend, Stephanie [portrayed by Kellee Stewart] advises PJ on how to get a man from the application of make up, acquiring fashion sense and how to exude her true femininity.
Being "one of the guys" brings a dynamic atmosphere to PJ's world with poker games, pick-up softball games, hanging out with the fellas to watch sports that their favorite bar. By the end of the first season, fans are left with a cliff hanger when PJ finally meets the right guy, or rather 'men'. The following season viewers got their answers about PJ's choice and the season picked up extra episodes and ended with another cliff hanger.
The third season premiered on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 with another set of 9 episodes. Of course the second season cliff hanger was resolved, as Bobby, PJ's crush of the moment breaks his engagement and finally admits his true feelings for her. Season three branches deeper into PJ and Bobby's secret love affair and chronicles how they juggle being writers for rivaling papers and the fact that she's a woman in a male dominated field.
The storyline around Stephanie and Kenny is PERFECT and it's almost like a MAX and Kyle situation from the TV show, "Living Single', as the two are always taking cheap shots at each other but end up in an unexpected situation which could evolve into a relationship.
Created and written by BETSY Thomas, My Boys has modest ratings but is a definite gem in a sea of reality TV. You can catch up with the full episodes and behind the scenes production notes at TBS.
