Oakland A’s starting pitcher Josh Outman will have surgery on his left elbow tomorrow, the club announced today. The surgery will be performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Details on the surgery and expected rehab time will be available after the surgery.
The news is a terrific setback for the young rookie, the least heralded of the A's four rookie starting pitchers, but the most consistently effective all year.
Outman was 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 14 games, 12 starts, with the A’s before he was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 24, retroactive to June 20. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday. The 24-year old left-hander allowed a .212 opponents batting average, including .123 against left-handed hitters and .211 with runners in scoring position. He currently ranks fourth among American League rookies with 53 strikeouts, tied for sixth in games started and tied for ninth in wins.
Second baseman Mark Ellis was activated and will again try to return from injuries that have kept him off the field for much of the past year. The A's best offensive player so far has been Elli's replacement, Adam Kennedy. Kennedy will remain in the starting lineup, but may move around a bit. He's expected to get the lion's share of the time at third base for the time being.
The A's have lost five in a row.
