Master of ceremonies Eddie Vedder and his band, Pearl Jam, wrapped up the closing concerts for the month at the Spectrum which included A-list performers such as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and Daryl Hall and John Oats.
Many special events hallmarked this epic time in South Philadelphia this month. Daryl Hall and John Oats invited former Spectrum employees to join them for their last show at the spectrum which concluded with a catered meet and greet on the stage after the show, Vedder invited 89- year-old stagehand Charlie DiFabio of Havertown who worked at the Spectrum since it’s doors opened in 1967 to join him on stage during their set, and fans where invited for free to come out and watch the 76ers during their last practice ever at the Spectrum followed by one last walk through around the tunnels that have held music idols such as Billy Joel and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
This past Halloween weekend is certainly one that will last forever in the minds of many Philadelphians. Starting off the weekend on Friday the 76ers hosted Milwaukee Bucks for their 2009-10 season opener. Saturday was jammed packed starting off with the Flyers hosting the Carolina Hurricanes in the afternoon followed by Pearl Jam taking the stage shortly before the first pitch of game three of the World Series was thrown out across the street at Citizens Bank Park. The weekend was concluded with the dynamic performance of the Philadelphia Eagles who crushed the Giants to tie them with Dallas for the top spot in the NFC east conference hours before game four of the World Series began.
This weekend was not only a send off to one of the best venues to ever operate in Philadelphia but a representation of the multitude of events that have been associated with the Spectrum for so many years. In fact, surely no one will ever forget the best basketball game played at the Spectrum on March 3rd 1992 when Christian Leattner’s overtime jump shot won Duke the Eastern Regional Final over Kentucky. They may be replacing the Spectrum but for those who have had the pleasure to sit in the 18,136 seat venue their memories will never be replaced.
