Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias is the clear favorite to win the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate seat, according to Politico. The seat is now being held by Senator Roland Burris who was appointed by disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich.
Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, the Illinois state treasurer, holds a commanding lead over his two potential primary rivals in the Illinois Senate race, according to a new poll obtained by POLITICO.
The poll, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, shows Giannoulias winning 45 percent of the primary vote against businessman (and RFK son) Chris Kennedy and Chicago Urban League president Cheryle Jackson. In the three-way race, Kennedy tallies 17 percent of the vote, with Jackson at 13 percent.
In a head-to-head matchup against Jackson, Giannoulias leads by 30 points, 51 percent to 21 percent.
The poll confirms what is already known in political circles: the race will come down to a showdown between Democrat Alexi Giannoulias and Republican Mark Kirk. Chicago City Hall Examiner.
