As the Holiday Season approaches, families are struggling to stay on budget without losing the spirit of generosity that accompanies this time of year.  The difficult economic situation will no doubt reduce the size and amount of gift giving.  It will be a challenge to explain to youngsters why they didn't get that highly coveted toy or gadget.  Despite these hard times, many local Hudson Valley schools are teaching our children the value of being charitable.

Students of Marlboro Elementary School  (MES) have been involved in a variety of acts of generosity since the school year began.  In September, Kindergartners through Third graders participated in Touch-A-Truck and Walk-A-Thon fundraisers to raise money for a new playground.  In October, students throughout the Marlboro Central School District participated in "Jar Wars" to help local families affected by Cystic Fibrosis.  Last year, their loose change filled classroom jars to total over $1800.   MES is currently collecting gently used books to place in Holiday food baskets for families throughout Marlboro.   In addition, the MES/MIS PTA began their annual food drive on November 2nd and will organize the PTA Giving Tree at the end of the month.  Even a local preschool in Marlboro is collecting non-perishable goods for the "Stuff the Bus" fundraiser for the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.

The current economic situation offers an opportunity for parents and schools to teach children about the true spirit of the Holiday Season through the gift of giving.  Although we may all be struggling, there are those in our communities who are even less fortunate.   Involving children in acts of charity teaches them kindness, compassion and gratitude at an early age.
