Put the thanks in your Thanksgiving by creating memories that will last a lifetime.  The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade is a fabulous way to start your holiday with friends and family.

The 83rd annual parade, held in New York City, is watched by millions on television.  But what television fails to capture, only those in attendance can appreciate.  It's a best kept family secret.

New York City is a beautiful place and visiting it on Thanksgiving morning will give your family something to remember for years to come.  The parade route begins at 77th street and Central Park West and follows along a  festive 2.65-mile journey before ending at Macy's, located at 34th street and 7th avenue.

When you think of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, you probably think of the huge and impressive signature balloons.  Did you know you could watch these charismatic characters come to life the day before the parade?  From 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm, between 77th street and 81st street, people can see these giant balloons inflated in preparation for the parade.

Here are some sure fire tips to help make your trip to the parade a fun one.  First, decide where you would like to stand to view the parade go by.  Next, what transportation will you use to enter the City?  Know your routes and if driving, arrive early and utilize street parking or a reputable parking garage.

Early means early.  Veteran spectators arrive as early at 6:00 am to obtain a front row view.  By 7:00 am, you are not likely to be closer than the third or fourth row back from the street.  Children especially, will enjoy the lengthy parade much better if they are able to see the clowns, dancers, marching bands and acrobats.  From a distance you miss out on these true interactive excitements.

Everyone should share this wonderful experience with their family at least once in their lifetime.  But be forewarned, once is likely to become a yearly family tradition.

Planning ahead is the best way to enjoy New York City.  Visit the links contained within this article to help facilitate your trip.  The City is a busy place no doubt, but one easily navigated if you do your homework.

Get to sleep early and plan to be on the street no later than 6:30 am.  Wear layers of clothing and pack some family snacks for the children.  Limit your beverage intake and use the facilities before settling into your viewing spot.  Oh, and be sure to put a full charge on your hand held video games and music players.  These will undoubtedly help pass the time for the children as you wait for the start of the parade.

Lastly, the New York City Police Department will be on hand in full force to make sure your visit to the parade is a safe and enjoyable one.  NYPD members will be visible along the parade route and will provide safety and assurance for all those in attendance.

Come feel the energy and magic firsthand, and celebrate Thanksgiving Day 2009 in a way your family will never forget.  And either will you.
