The 'Air Car' has been developed by MDI, a French company.

Here's a technology that might have traction - cars that run on compressed air and fuel and provide as much as 106 miles per gallon.

This CNN article says a French company called MDI has been working on the technology, and now New York-based Zero Pollution Motors has obtained the first license to build the cars in the United States.

The vice president of MDI and CEO of Zero Pollution Motors, Shiva Vencat, said the company plans to build six-seat vehicles that could hit 90 mph and have a range of more than 800 miles. Price? Under $18,000.

The vehicle's speed determines whether it runs on just air or both air and fuel. The design incorporates at least an 8-gallon fuel tank.

The Zero Pollution Motors site has plenty of information about the so-called "Air Car." It says the company will begin taking orders next year for delivery some time in 2010.

And just in case $18,000 is too pricey for you, check out this Air Car you can build "for as little as $25."
