The test uses a microchip scanner that can detect small amounts of tumor cells in a patient's blood. That can aid treatments and help patients avoid side effects of medications that they may in fact not need for treatment.
The International Herald Tribune reports on the new technology - known as CTC-chip - here.
The test is an upgrade from current technology, like MRI and CAT scans, that are used to track a cancer's progress. Those scans can show whether a tumor is growing or shrinking, but it can take weeks for the change to be visible on a scan.
