New laptop bags designed to fly through airport security

companies are working on new designs
for their laptop bags.

Targus and other manufacturers expect to have "checkpoint friendly" laptop bags available later this year. The bags would be stamped with a sticker so the TSA won't feel the need to make you take that laptop out of the bag when going through airport security.

Pathfinder Luggage says it is producing two different cases at a plant in the Phillipines. The company says the TSA already has signed off on the design.

The key is to make the bag more "transparent," so X-ray can more clearly see the contents inside.

Some folks wonder whether they can just get a sticker for an existing bag, but the TSA has said current bag design makes it difficult to get a clear view of the contents. And even with a "checkpoint" sticker, the TSA still could make travelers unload their laptops after (or before) they pass through X-ray.

So will this really speed up security lines? Probably not, especially since travelers now are packing more gear into carry-on luggage to avoid charges for checked bags.

Quick fact: The TSA says some 25 percent of airline travelers carry a laptop with them.
