Flying With A Laptop? Here's How To Keep Your Data Safe

Ok folks, listen up - if you're traveling across the border with a laptop computer or other electronic device, it could get seized by customs officials if they think you're a security risk (or if they simply decide they don't like you).

But there are ways to keep your data safe from prying eyes. Much has been written about it, but C/NET blogger Chris Soghoian made a recent post that provides plenty of information.

I'll summarize what Soghoian wrote:

1) Back up your data before leaving on your trip.

2) Create an encrypted disk image/encrypted folder, and remember the password.

3) Upload the encrypted data to the Internet, to a place where it can be stored to access later.

4) Wipe clean your laptop, and install a fresh copy of your operating system.

5) Wait until you arrive at your destination, then download the encrypted data and decrypt it for use.

And happy traveling.
