Word Up - Livescribe's New Pen A Digital Marvel

May 3, 11:26 AM
by Darrell Proctor, Business Examiner

Writers are always looking for new ways to hone their craft. Or simply looking for new ways to write.

Enter Livescribe, which touts its new Pulse smartpen as revolutionary. At the very least, it's one cool gadget - though some folks might have trouble justifying its price if they think they're simply buying a nice writing instrument.

But this is no ordinary ink pen. The Pulse makes digital copies of notes, linked to recorded audio. Obviously, this would be a great tool for reporters or college students, or anyone who needs an easier, faster way to keep track of minutes for meetings, etc. You're taking notes, and now you can quickly find the audio for that portion of your notes.

The Pulse (available in 1GB and 2GB models) also can translate a foreign language, as well as do simple calculations.

Some other features: The Pulse is about a half-inch in diameter and about 6 inches long. The 2GB memory can give you 150 to 200 hours of recording time, about 60,000 pages of notes. It has two embedded mics and a data/charging dock.

The 1GB model is priced at $149, with the 2GB model at $199. Check it out - including an interactive demo - at the Livescribe Web site.
