The set-top box may be going the way of the dinosaur. Sony Electronics and the National Cable and Telecommunications Association say they've signed a deal to allow viewers to receive advanced two-way cable services - think on-demand and pay-per-view, for starters - without a set-top box.
How would it work? Sony says it will use cable company technology in its sets, which would eliminate the need for the set-top box. The deal pairs Sony with the six largest cable companies in the U.S. - Bright House Networks, Cablevision Systems, Charter Communications, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner.
There's no timetable on when the first sets would be available, but expect them sooner rather than later if market forces have a say.
