According to a story from Tokyo at theage.com.au, Japan's "biggest electronics companies have joined forces with the telecommunications industry to develop a technological standard for a new 'internet television' set that will let users browse websites and watch streaming online programs at the touch of a remote control."
The report goes on to say that "Japanese media reports say the new televisions, which are likely to run on the Linux operating system rather than Microsoft Windows to save boot-up time, could be on sale locally by next March."
An announcement about the rollout of the technology is expected within weeks. While many of us already watch some of our favorite shows online, doing so in real time on a television that also affords the ability to simultaneously work on the Web would represent a significant step forward.
Broadband television does exist, though it's been limited since it's usually available only through equipment compatible with the Internet service provider - and this technology would eliminate that.
