Backing Up Data? Maxtor Goes To The Max On Security

April 29, 2:34 PM
by Darrell Proctor, Business Examiner

I've used Maxtor products in the past and been satisfied, and I suspect I wouldn't be disappointed with the latest Maxtor offering from Seagate Technology.

The Maxtor Black Armor (160 GB, USB 2.0) has a bunch of features, and Wired magazine says it offers "the most secure portable storage ever."

Wired notes that "data is encoded by semiconductors on the drive itself, so even if you pull the platters out, you'll extract only gibberish."

Among its features:

  • The Black Armor has 128-bit AES encryption, with access through a six-to-24 character password.
  • It automatically locks when the USB cable is removed from your PC.
  • It allows for synching data among two or more PCs.
  • It can erase data so it can't be recovered.
  • It also can hold some 40, two-hour movies, 160 hours of digital video, and more than 2,600 hours of digital music.

You can read all about the Black Armor here. Seagate says it can be pre-ordered now (current price $149) for shipping in late May.
