Google Makes A Social Statement
POSTED May 13, 9:15 AM
Internet giant Google has announced a new service that could revolutionize social networking. At the very least, it puts the Mountain View, Calif.-based behemoth in a position to grow even more.

Google's new service - Friend Connect - aims to allow any Web site to become a social site. Simply put, visitors to a Web site would be able to meet and reach out to other visitors to the site, exchanging messages and connecting in the same way folks do on sites such as MySpace, Facebook, etc.

David Glazer, an engineering director working on the project, told the Washington Post: "We're in the middle of a huge change. Wherever people go on the Web, they want to have their friends with them, and this makes it possible."

How does a Web site sign up? Simple - the site's owner/manager adds code to its page; that enables Google's servers to handle the interaction among visitors.

Google officials said Monday that the service will be limited at the start, but expect it will be widely available in a few months.
