Professional photographers know plenty of ways to get the most from their photos, and from their subjects.

They know that lighting is key - and that lighting (along with some other photo manipulation) has led The Atlantic Monthly magazine to say it will apologize to GOP presidential candidate John McCain for photos shot by Jill Greenberg.

Seems some of Greenberg's photos of McCain for the magazine's October issue used lighting that caused McCain to be cast in an unflattering light. Greenberg also admitted manipulating other photos (now making the rounds on the Internet on Greenberg's Web site, among others).

You won't see those photos in the magazine - a different shot was chosen for the cover - but the magazine's editor called Greenberg's personal use of some of the photos she shot "unprofessional."
