Coast Guard copters making rescues in Texas; storm surge could hit 25 feet; 37,000 may need help

The Coast Guard has begun rescue operations along the Texas coast around Galveston as the storm surge from Hurricane Ike - projected to be as much as 25 feet in some places - moves ashore.

A U.S. military official said as many as 37,000 people may need to be rescued from the storm.

Storm surge is caused when strong winds push against the surface of the water, causing it to pile up before it is pushed ashore.

The Coast Guard's operations have been aided by the Air Force, which sent rescue teams to help extract 22 crew members off the freighter Antalina in the Gulf of Mexico south of Galveston.

The Coast Guard is using HH-65C helicopters in its rescue operations. You can learn more about the HH-65C helicopter - and other Coast Guard rescue copters - here. The video below shows the HH-65C in action at an air show in Pennsylvania in 2007.

In Texas, those trying to flee the storm's path have dealt with clogged highways and - unfortunately - higher gas prices. Some gas stations in the Houston area jumped prices by 15 to 20 cents a gallon, although AAA said only a moderate increase was noted across Texas.

Check out Webcams from the Galveston, Texas, area at HurricaneTrack.com. Video from the 1900 storm that hit Galveston and left an estimated 8,000 people dead can be found here.
