That's 1 Billion PCs, And Counting

June 23, 12:58 PM

Emerging markets will account
for most future PC installations.

Research firm Gartner reports today that the number of personal computers in use worldwide has passed the 1 billion mark.

Gartner said that "mature" markets accounted for 58 percent of the first billion installed PCs, but that most new PCs now would be used in emerging markets, with mature markets accounting for about 30 percent of the next billion.

"Rapid penetration in emerging markets is being driven by the explosive expansion of broadband and wireless connectivity, the continuing fall in PC average selling prices, and the general realization that PCs are an indispensable tool for advancement," George Shiffler, research director at Gartner, said.

Did you know?: The first personal computers that most of us would recognize came around in the 1970s and were mostly used in academia. The first mass-produced PCs hit the market in the late '70s, and the IBM PC Model 5150 - the first PC for many folks - launched in 1981. But Edmund Berkeley's "Simon" computer, introduced in 1950, might well hold the title as the first actual personal computer. ((Blinkenlights Archaeological Institute)
