White spaces could be key to Web in rural regions

The Wireless Innovation Alliance includes a variety of companies.
Companies continue to wrestle with how to provide mobile high-speed Internet service across cities and throughout rural areas.

And now they're looking to television to provide an answer.

Engineers from several companies have been testing "white spaces," the unlicensed airwaves between TV stations.

Jake Ward, a spokesman for the Wireless Innovation Alliance, told The Washington Post that using white spaces "will provide a way to provide broadband across long distances at much faster speeds than cellphone networks and Wi-Fi."

The WIA includes such companies as H-P, Dell and Google.
