And now they're looking to television to provide an answer.
Engineers from several companies have been testing "white spaces," the unlicensed airwaves between TV stations.
Jake Ward, a spokesman for the Wireless Innovation Alliance, told The Washington Post that using white spaces "will provide a way to provide broadband across long distances at much faster speeds than cellphone networks and Wi-Fi."
The WIA includes such companies as H-P, Dell and Google.
