The virtual colonoscopy can spot
abnormalities via X-ray. (Vision Systems Group)

A colonoscopy is something most folks dread. So an alternative to it - a test that could detect possible cancers via X-ray rather than a probe - has been sought for a while.

And now a federal study of an X-ray alternative has proved mostly effective, though still not perfect.

A key note about the X-ray versus the invasive procedure. A colonoscopy can cost up to $3,000; the X-ray costs $300 to $800. One drawback - most insurers currently don't cover it.
