The Chevrolet Volt was unveiled to the public today, as GM took the wraps off the electric vehicle that it says will go on sale in 2010.
"The Volt symbolizes GM's commitment to the future," said Rick Wagoner, the company's chairman and CEO.
The Volt will be powered by electricity that will be stored in a lithium-ion battery. The T-shaped battery will run the length of the car.
GM says that with a full charge, the car will run for up to 40 miles without gasoline, with a range of 400 miles using the internal combustion engine that will charge the battery while driving. Top speed is expected to be 100 mph with about 150 horsepower.
Charging will be simple, via a cord plugged into any regular home outlet. The charging ports are located on each side of the vehicle near the side mirrors.
The pricetag for the Volt has been pegged around $40,000, though final pricing has not been announced.
