Hurricane Ike left a trail of damage across Cuba. (BBC)

Hurricane Ike has caused residents along Texas' Gulf Coast to head inland, but storm chasers are moving in the opposite direction, putting their high-tech cameras and weather data gear directly in the storm's path.

These hurricane chasers want a first-hand look at Ike - both to provide a visual record and to help weather watchers better understand the inner workings of monster storms.

The video record of the deadly 1900 storm that struck Galveston, Texas - leaving an estimated 8,000 people dead - consists of a 1-minute video shot by an assistant of Thomas Edison. This time, plenty of cameras are on hand to record Ike's visit.
