Coal is an abundant energy resource, but many
environmentalists consider it a dirty four-letter word.

Rentech Inc. has announced the successful production of synthetic fuel at its plant in Commerce City, Colo.

That's big news for the coal-to-liquids crowd, which touts the benefits of synthesizing coal - an abundant resource but one despised by some for its carbon content - into clean transportation fuels.

The Air Transport Association of America, the major trade group for U.S. airlines, is particularly interested in CTL research as it tries to find alternative fuels to lower its costs.

Go here to read Rentech's press release on its project, including comments from Jim May, president and CEO of the ATA.
