Some schools are handing out iPhones to students.

There are several advantages to heading off to college.

And for some students, that means some nice perks.

The New York Times (via the International Herald Tribune) reports that some schools are welcoming freshmen by handing them iPods and iPhones, in an effort to provide more tools for learning. Or perhaps it's more tools for distraction.

In any event, it's a great marketing tool for Apple, which has a knack for such things. Whether students will use the tools as they're intended is another matter.
